Abstract: The objective of this research was to identify and analyze different factors influencing academic achievement. A survey was conducted by using a questionnaire for information gathering about learning preferences, entry qualifications, class size, number of hours studying, student’s competence in English, gender, age, family income, parents’ education level and students’ area. The result of their first-grade annual examination gauged the academic performance. Pearson’s correlation coefficient, multiple regression analysis, independent samples t-test and non-parametric test were used to analyze the data collected. The estimated effect of studying indicates that student’s learning preferences, number of daily study hour and secondary average positively affect student’s achievement, also, English language level has a positive influence on students’ academic performance. The results show that female perform better than male students and married students realize significantly more academic success than single. While, class size, age, residential area of student, family size, family income and parents’ education level have no significant influence.

Abstract: The purpose of this study was to examine the role of university-industry collaboration in producing banking and finance graduates with employability skills from instructors and industries viewpoint. For this purpose, mixed research design called embedded design was employed. The sample of 76 industry employees and 73 instructors were selected using simple random sampling method, lottery system. Questionnaire was used as major data collection instrument and its reliability estimate coefficient was α=0.81. Mean difference of responses from two independent groups (industry employees and instructors) was tested through non-directional independent sample (two-sample) t-test. The mean of instructors’ responses on banking and finance graduates professional knowledge, skills and ethics was compared with the mean of industry employees’ responses. Thus, no statistically significant mean difference was obtained. In conclusion, industry workers and instructors believe that banking and finance graduates have acquired demonstrable theoretical and practical knowledge, professional skills, and professional ethics. Finally, the researchers commended the need to develop competency models for each occupation or job group so as to define graduates’ successful performance in a particular work setting via their demonstrable competencies.

Abstract: Actions in reducing excessive sun exposure during childhood and adolescence has been a goal of a series of programs. The objective of this study was to evaluate a multi-component high school-based intervention program to increase sun safety knowledge and sun protection behaviors among students in Beijing, China. Volunteers from three high schools in Beijing were randomized to three groups. Group A was given a 2-year intervention program consisting of multi-unit presentations plus a series of educational materials. Group B was given a 1-year intervention program with educational materials only. Group C was served as a control group. Questionnaires were answered by the three groups at baseline, year 1, and year 2. In our study, group A achieved significant improvements in all six questions about the sun and sunscreen knowledge at year 1. Group B achieved significant improvements in two questions. Both groups A and B achieved significant improvements in avoiding sun exposure at noon and seeking shade. Group A achieved improvements in almost all sun knowledge and sun protection behaviors, with the exception of using sunglasses, at year 2 compared with year 1. We conclude that school-based sun protection intervention increases student knowledge and changes student sun protection behaviors. The 2-year program could achieved better results than the 1-year program.

Abstract: This paper reviewed a one-term experiment on integrating internet-based language laboratory (IBLL) in teaching translation skills with the know-want-learn (KWL) plus model to 132 first-year non-English-majored undergraduate students from Yangtze University as subjects. Subjects in this study consisted of 66 non-English-majored undergraduates in the control group (CG) and 66 non-English-majored undergraduates in the treatment group (TG). The results showed that 1) compared with a teacher-dominated approach for CG, the internet-based language laboratory with KWL plus model of meta-cognitive translation strategy instruction for TG did a better job in enhancing students’ translation skills; 2) there were significant differences between males in CG and TG, and females in CG and EG; 3) students in TG held the positive response for the combined translation teaching method.
