Abstract: This paper aims to explore the research-led pedagogy in contemporary planning education. A case study was conducted in the Department of Urban Planning and Design, Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University, to show a range of teaching and learning methods which aimed to embed research into the academic experience, thereby facilitating students’ active learning. The application of these new teaching models (e.g. integrated teaching across different modules, interdisciplinary workshops, field studies, summer undergraduate research projects, games, etc.), as a move away from the lecture-based approach to a hands-on approach, provides an opportunity for students to engage with some innovative concepts (e.g. sustainability, resilience, etc.) and explore their applicability and value in practice. It was found from this study that there is an urgent need to foster a research-led learning environment which can facilitate innovative educational practices or similar. Such an ongoing process can also help students deepen their understanding of the latest requirements of China’s overall strategic development plans (e.g. the integrative development of urban and rural areas) and thereby cope with new issues arising in the urban-rural transformation. Since the host institution of this study (XJTLU) is itself a joint venture between Xi’an Jiaotong University China and the University of Liverpool UK, some findings from this case study reflect the differences of educational practices between the UK and China.

Abstract: The subject of the present research is the analysis and evaluation of effects in way of separation, companionship, and bordering the private, semi- private and public areas within the collective settlements with focus on way of creating a livable setting. The field studies signify that the primary principles and fundamentals of architecture and urban setting landscape are employed at low level in most of the collective settlements and townships in Iran and the higher requirements such as sense of place, self-esteem, self-actualization, and or cognitive and aesthetic requirements have been ignored in design of them. The present investigation has proposed the educational strategies and some criteria for design of setting in collective settlements with respect to environmental psychology basic concepts like privacy, personal setting, territory, traffic, and paying attention to individuals’ needs, wishes, and culture to achieve the preparation for more efficient and livable settings and areas. The above-mentioned study has been carried out by means of survey- descriptive research aiming at identifying cause-and-effect relation in order to describe the attributes of statistical population and way of nature under the existing conditions and the relationship between the events at small scale by adaption of cross- sectional and longitudinal techniques. Then, the hypotheses were explored by means of relational- correlation method along with abstract paradigms as environmental data through recognizing the public attitude toward the environmental by non- interventionist approach and the field studies were conducted through qualitative and quantitative methods. Eventually, this trend led to analysis and recording the results and proposing a strategy for conversion of design principles into educational trend of environmental design in this regard.

Abstract: The present article is intended to interpret the state and position of Environment- Behavior (E.B) studies in architectural training in Iran (Contemporary era) in order to examine the status quo along with expressing the deficiencies in the path of prediction of future measures as an interdisciplinary approach. On the other hand, the analysis of the existing literature in Environment- Behavior (E.B) knowledge in environmental design will be also as other part of these efforts for application in the field of training of architecture. The method that was used in this research is to move from descriptive analysis approach toward inductive analysis. The results of this article include identifying the existing approaches in environmental design knowledge in Iran in which it deals with proposing suggestions for developing E.B field to use this method in training of environmental design at theoretical level in Iran.
