Abstract: The purpose of the present study was to compare the scores on body shape (current, ideal and social) and body size dissatisfaction between men and women high school Mexican students. A total sample of 653 participants, 322 women and 331 men, aged 13-19 years participated in this study. A quantitative approach with a descriptive and transversal survey design was used. All the participants completed the Contour Drawing Rating Scale. The results of the one-way multivariate analysis of variance, followed by the one-way univariate analyses of variance, showed that compared with the men, the women expressed a greater discrepancy between ideal and actual body shape and had higher score of social body shape and lower score of ideal body shape (F1 = 90.123; p < .001). However, in the current body shape statistically significant differences were not found. Because of the differences between men and women in their perception of body image found, these findings suggest that in order to design any intervention for improving the perceived body image of the students, the variable gender should be taken into account.

Abstract: Reading is one of the most important skills that foreign language learners should know, and is affected by various non linguistic factors. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of gender and genre on text comprehension. To this end, three texts from different genres were selected and administered to thirty male and female EFL learners who were at intermediate level. The selected genres were labels and signs, informal letter and newspaper. After administering the reading tests, the participants’ mean scores were computed and the results showed that altogether females were better text comprehenders than males. To see the effect of gender on text comprehension a one way ANOVA was run and it was found that both male and female participants performed differently on various genres. Moreover, to investigate the effect of both gender and genre on participants’ text comprehension a two-way ANOVA was employed and the result showed they did not have any significant effect on text comprehension. The participants performed better on familiar genres regardless of their gender. These results have some implications for teachers. First, they should not rely on just text difficulty for choosing texts for reading courses. Next, they should provide male students with more practice in reading comprehension.

Abstract: As communicative language teaching (CLT) has gained prominence over the traditional language teaching methods, the ultimate goals of language teaching are not only language knowledge but also the function of language, thus students’ communicative competence becomes the focus of the compilation of teaching materials. This paper aims to analyze “Experiencing English” by the criteria of the 5 components of a communicative curriculum, i.e. Language Arts, Language for a Purpose, Personal L2 Use, Theater Arts, and Beyond the Classroom, to see if its design, organization and material selection are in conformity with the development of learners’ communicative competence. Results show that “Experience English” has well incorporated language knowledge, the negotiation of meaning, the development of communicative competence, and the cultivation of autonomous learning, and also put an emphasis on abilities such as problem solving, self expression, and creative use of language. Challenges of College English teaching in China are discussed as well.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to try and establish the influence of the quota system of education in Kenya on national unity. The study’s target population was four thousand one hundred and seventy one (4171), and the sample of four hundred and thirty (432), who include three hundred and ninety one (391) learners and forty nine (49) lecturers from The Catholic University of Eastern Africa. The study employed a combination of descriptive survey and naturalistic design, employing both qualitative and quantitative approaches in research. The instruments of data collection were the questionnaire and interview guide to enhance comprehensive data collection. Statistical procedures were used to sort, analyze and summarize the data into frequencies and percentages. The qualitative data generated in the research was analyzed thematically. Analysis was done using Microsoft Word (a word processing program) and two statistical analysis software PSPP and R. From the research findings, on the quota system of education and its influence on national unity, the researcher was able to identify the following: teacher employment, student selection process and poverty as factors leading to minimal or lack of student / teacher interaction with other cultures and exposure to different environments giving rise to closed societies, closed cultures and teachers who are not globally exposed. These factors may give rise to a closed individual who might end up not being fully acculturated to different environments lacking the necessary skills to foster harmony in society.

Abstract: English films integrate locales, voices, images, plots, and characters. Some have text captions. They are normally regarded as a carrier of public entertainment. But in web-based and resource-driven English learning setting, the role of English films is not just to entertain the public, but to activate the background knowledge stored in the learners’ brains with their Visual-spatial Intelligence and deepen their understanding of the language and its culture through remembrance, association and reconstruction. The outcome is to transform the linguistic and cultural input into an effective learning output.
