Abstract: Compassion fatigue refers to fatigue, depression and a decline in empathy caused by prolonged exposure to the stress of people being served. Research regarding compassion fatigue in western countries has been well researched and results demonstrate that compassion fatigue of medical workers, especially nurses is getting growing attention. Compassion fatigue affects nurses’ psychology which in turn affects the quality of nursing care. Limited research has been carried out in China focusing on the topic of compassion fatigue. This study aims to determine the prevalence and related factors of nurses' compassion fatigue in a tertiary hospital in Southwest China. This literature review introduces in detail how the literature search was carried out and identifies three themes emerging from the included articles. This review identifies current knowledge relating to CF, identifies the related factors affecting CF (working time, job content and working environment) and finally discusses future research directions. Research on related factors and the intervention measures of CF is very limited so far, therefore, future research aims to carry out similar investigations in different regions in China on a larger scale so as to help people identify the signs of CF in a timely manner and deal with this diagnosis effectively. The development of this study will enhance the attention of nurses and their managers to the concept of compassion fatigue, reducing its association factors and adverse effects.

Abstract: Objective: To evaluate the effectiveness of a family caregiver empowerment intervention for improving the quality of life and anxiety of patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD). Methods: A total of 92 COPD patients hospitalized in the Department of Respiratory Medicine of a hospital in Dongguan from November 2018 to August 2019 were enrolled in this study. They were divided into observation and control group (both n = 46). The control group was provided with routine nursing treatment and health education; the observation group was empowered via routine nursing treatment and health education for the main caregivers of COPD patients. The two groups were followed up by telephone, or door-to-door, and data were collected before the intervention and 1, 3 and 6 months after discharge. The data included the COPD Assessment Test (CAT) score, modified Medical Research Council (mMRC) dyspnea scale score and Self-rating Anxiety Scale (SAS) score of the patients, and knowledge level of the main caregivers. Results: There was no significant difference in the general characteristics of the two groups of patients or their main family caregivers (P > 0.05). After the intervention, there was a significant difference in the quality of life of the two groups, according to the CAT, mMRC dyspnea scale and SAS scores, and in the knowledge levels of the main caregivers (P < 0.05). Conclusions: In the COPD population, the intervention to empower family caregivers was effective. The knowledge level of the main caregivers was improved, as well as the dyspnea and quality of life of the patients. The anxiety and negative emotions of the patients were also reduced to some extent.

Abstract: Introduction: Pain results from real or potential tissue damage that involves a disagreement sensory and emotional experience. Poor practice in post-operative pain management results in negative clinical outcomes, chronic pain, financial burden, and a reduction in patient functionality and productivity. The study was used for the hospitals administrations, health professionals, committee that develop the pain management guideline, researcher, and governmental health institutions regarding the practice of postoperative pain management. Objective: To assess postoperative pain management practices and associated factors towards healthcare professionals working in governmental hospitals in South Wollo Zone, Northeast Ethiopia, 2020. Method and Materials:- Cross-sectional study design was conducted from 20/02/2020 to 25/03/2020. The study population was selected from south Wollo zone governmental hospitals and 386 samples were collected using a self-administered tool and verified, coded, and entered to Epi-data software version 3.1 and exported to SPSS software version 23 for analysis. To summarize descriptive statistics frequencies, percentages, and mean were used and presented with tables, charts, and figures. Result: The response rate of the study participants were 95.8%. Among the participants 57.5%, of the study respondents had good practice and 42.5% had poor practice of postoperative pain management. The variable, working intensive care unit (AOR (95%CI)=14.5 (1.503-139.93)), using assessment tool (AOR (95%CI)=10.622 (4.776-23.621)), using Pain scale (AOR (95%CI)=10.614 (4.803-23.456)), Do documentation (AOR (95%CI)=6.748 (2.977-15.294)), take training (AOR (95%CI)=4.126 (1.707-9.977)), had past pain experience (AOR (95%CI)=4.174 (1.821-9.564)), favorable attitude (AOR (95%CI)=2.592 (1.191-5.643)); such independent variables were significantly association with the postoperative pain management practice. Conclusion: The overall level of poor postoperative pain management practice among health professionals in the study area was low.

Optimizing Post-Surgical Pain Management in Adult Surgical Patients: Effects of Training Interventions on Surgical Nurses’ Knowledge

Abstract: Context: There is a surplus of contemporary scientific evidence-based indicated numerous precarious positions with inadequate post-surgical pain management in adult surgical patients. The most important barrier in this context was suboptimal postsurgical pain interventions. Aim: This nursing improvement initiative aimed to optimize post-surgical pain nursing interventions in adult surgical patients by training surgical nurses the strategies to enhance their pain management competencies in one teaching hospital in Saudi Arabia. Materials and methods: A descriptive, cross-sectional pain prevalence survey was conducted quarterly in all eight adult surgical inpatients wards to determine and assess if their pain was controlled to a satisfactory level of less than moderate pain. Secondly, pre-and post-test surgical nurses’ knowledge assessment surveys were conducted. Descriptive statistics were used to analyze and interpret and present the data. Results: The outcomes demonstrated that through the improvement nursing initiative strategies implemented, the pain prevalence survey in February 2020 improved by more than 9% with an average of 93.4% (n=142; N=152) of patients with pain intensity less than moderate pain, while in September after omitting quarter three due to Covid-19 surge, all eight surgical wards achieved an average of 88% (n=152; N=173), thus improved by 3,6% compared to the results of November 2019. The average pretest pain knowledge assessment survey taken in January 2020 by 103 surgical nurses in all eight surgical wards was 71%. In October 2020, 114 surgical nurses participated in the post-test and achieved 83%, demonstrated an increase of more than 12% from all 20 questions. Conclusion: The eight surgical wards substantially achieved more than 80% of patients with controlled postsurgical pain levels of less than moderate pain during the last two prevalence cycles, and the posttest revealed pain management knowledge acquisition from the baseline of the pretest conducted. It is therefore postulated that it is essential to monitor the pain management quality of delivered patient nursing care interventions based on the type of pain and consider the provision of refresher training sessions to influence practical skills of pain management competencies.

Abstract: Introduction: VAP infections are associated with health risks, such as the development of sepsis, lung damage, and increased mortality rates. The higher mortality rate among VAP patients is mainly related to risks posed by severe pathogens that may enter the respiratory tract. Applying various preventive measures reduces the risk and incidence of VAP. This study aimed to determine the incidence and effects of VAP in Saudi Arabia. The study also determined measures that can be undertaken to prevent ventilated patients from developing VAP. Methods: A systematic review design was used. The included studies were published after 2015 in the English language and relevant to the topic of concern. Results: Eleven articles were selected for inclusion in the study. The incidence of VAP in Saudi Arabia was low during the study period. Using the VAP prevention and treatment bundle led to reduced VAP infection rates among mechanically ventilated patients in the ICU. Conclusion: The use of the VAP prevention and treatment bundle and other strategies reduced the risk of ventilated patients developing VAP. The use of the VAP prevention bundle may have helped reduce the incidence of VAP in both hospitals, as well as their mortality rates, and may have increased the rate at which patients were transferred from the ICU.
