Abstract: This descriptive research analyzes selected Igbo proverbs and idiomatic expressions using translation approach. While literal translation is used to reveal the syntactic structures of the selected fixed expressions in Igbo, semantic translation is also used to reveal the rich meaning of the expressions. The application of these procedures helps reveals the tenets of advice, motivations and blame that are inherent in Igbo proverbs and idioms. It is such values as these that are of reformatory benefits during the periods of social or economic crisis. A number of Igbo proverbs and idioms were collected from Igbo native speakers and some written texts. From this corpus, proverbs and idiomatic expressions that appear to have relevance to nature, social and economic issues were selected and classified into two lists – proverbs list and idiomatic expressions list. These two lists were given to elderly Igbo native speakers who are also linguistically knowledgeable in the language to determine their appropriateness for inclusion in the lists. After this, both literal and semantic translation of the proverbs and idiomatic expressions were made from Igbo into English. Implications are drawn based on what the two translation approaches revealed. At the end of the study, it was found that Igbo proverbs and idioms consist of many wise conceptual frames and reformative tenets capable of motivating the individual and encouraging hard work. The research recommends therefore, that the deployment of rich linguistic resources like fixed expressions have great positive implications in curbing economic crisis since they can be used to give pieces of social advice that will help economic growth of the individuals and the society at large at the moment of crisis.Abstract: This descriptive research analyzes selected Igbo proverbs and idiomatic expressions using translation approach. Abstract: The use of internet as a teaching tool is predominant all around the world and teachers try to devise it in order to accelerate and facilitate language learning for their students. However in Iran, few studies have concentrated on this type of methodology and it is rarely practiced among English language instructors. Thus this study aimed at investigating the effect of CALL methods on teaching English grammar in general and passive voice in particular to Intermediate EFL students. For this purpose the researcher took advantage of weblogs as a CALL program. The students who were being taught by the researcher were given a pretest at the beginning of the course and then a subject to write about each week on their weblog. They were advised to use more passive voice than active in their essays. Consequently their performance was evaluated in 2 ways: one group by their peers through recast and the other group by the teacher, via traditional methods to see which method was more effective in teaching grammar, peer corrective recast or instructor’s corrective hints. The text book used by the instructor during this experimental course was Top Notch. The number of errors could determine the results of pretest and posttest. Then frequency, mean and Standard Deviation were used for providing the results and statistics. Finally, a T-test was devised in order to verify the difference between means of both groups. Abstract: Modernism brought with itself a great change to the philosophical and scientific ideas. Philosophies about time were not free from this change and the French philosopher Henri Bergson reinterpreted time. He divided time into specialized (linear time) and duration. The artists and the writers of the modern era were much influenced by these ideas and Katherine Mansfield was among this group. She made use of new techniques and methods in order to write her short stories. One of the important characteristic of her stories is the shift in time that she uses, and plunging into the consciousness of her characters in order to show their inner time and world. Her characters are either rooted in their past and totally forget about linear time, or they are slaves of the linear time allowing it to influence their life. Her stories show that some people fit very well with the clock and some do not. Her characters perceive time differently according to the age and social conditions that they are living in. The aim of this study is to explore how Mansfield deals with time in her stories and what methods she uses to demonstrate time in them from Bergson’s point of view. It will also investigate the significance of time for her characters and will show whether they can fit with the clock or not.
