Abstract: ICT (IT) technologies are globally the most wanted job vacancies nowadays, and ICT job descriptions are the same across the world, at least in the World Wide Web. To some extent, they can be adjusted to a particular market. The market of our interest is Croatia with the characteristics of its own, providing ICT specialists not only for its own market, but also for a more developed, mostly European market. As a result, there is a lack of ICT specialists for Croatian market and not enough time for fully qualified workers. A common characteristic of global ICT market is the use of the English language as a lingua franca. The official language in Croatia is Standard Croatian. The law allows company names to be in Croatian and any other official EU languages. English as a first foreign language in Croatian schools has subsequently become a means of business dealing. The lack of IT specialists accompanied by a lack of time for the Croatian language to adapt to new circumstances as well as English being widespread in the real and digital world has resulted in a different use not only of English, but Croatian, too. English is used in its US form properly, and it is also used in its Croatian version (as borrowed words and phrases adapted more or less on phonological, morphological and orthographic level), or – according to the principles of Standard Croatian (regarding mostly purism, principle of analogy), in Croatian translation. Discrepancy between market demands and time necessary for the Croatian language to adapt leads to jargon phrases, which are becoming new technical terms. The question is whether Standard Croatian, Croatian society (law) and its market include these terms as necessary borrowed words that are adapted on phonological and morphological levels, or whether there are still tendencies of purism in Croatia and the Croatian language to calque these English words and phrases in the ICT context in order to preserve the individuality and distinctiveness of Croatian from an encompassing influence of English?

Abstract: The principal aim of this investigation was to explore articulatory properties of two fricatives in Uyghur, in order to gain insight the differences of place of articulation and the influences of surrounding vowel. To this end, articulatory effects of adjacent vowel [a, i, u] were measured at four different time points in CV syllable. Linguopalatal contact patterns derived from electropalatographic recordings were used in this study. The articulatory mechanisms of sibilant fricatives /s/ and /ʃ/ in Uyghur were investigated in this paper, so as to find that /s/ was alveolar while /ʃ/ was alveopalatal in constriction place formed in oral cavity. In terms of coarticulatory effect of following vowel on the production of fricatives, the former was affected by rounded, back vowel/ u / while the latter was affected by front, high vowel/i/. In terms of front-back dimension, articulatory movement of both fricatives in alveolar region was most stable while it was vulnerable to articulatory effect of vowels in palatal region. In terms of different articulatory times (phases), the point of maximum contact was the most stable one for both fricatives.

Semantic Analysis of «False- Friends»: A Case Study of English and Siin Seereer

Abstract: The article is devoted to the semantic analysis of words called “False- Friends” in English and Siin Seereer. “False- Friends” are words belonging to two different languages and which have a great similarity in form between them or are written in the same, but whose meanings are different. In other words, a word is considered “False- Friend” when it is close in its writing or pronunciation to a term of another language but whose meaning is different. Thus, the study focuses on some words that belong both to English and Siin Seereer languages and whose meanings are different. English and Seereer are two different languages which do not belong to the same language family. English belongs to the Indo European language family, whereas Seereer is part of the West Atlantic branch of the Niger-Congo family. However, there are several identical words (in terms of writing) in these two languages and whose meanings may cause lots of difficulties to Seereer native speakers who learn English and to English native speakers who learn Seereer language. Furthermore, the study and/or analysis of these “False-Friends” arouse several questions some of which: Why do these two languages share these common words? Do these words have certain meanings in common? Do they belong to the same grammatical categories? Are they structured in the same way in both languages? Do these “False-Friends” have the same pronunciation in English and Seereer? What are their linguistic similarities and differences? To find answers to these questions, we will strive to explore the writings of some Seereer students. Field surveys as well as interviews of native speakers will also be organized and analyzed in this study. In addition, we will read documents (books, articles, novels, stories, etc.) written in English and in Siin Seereer. This research will help us have a lot of information and collect data for the corpus. After the elaboration of the corpus, we will move on to data analysis and we will end up with results that we are going to present during the discussions.

Abstract: After years of poetry creation, the poet chooses fixed images to express certain ideas or emotions. These words with certain ready-made meanings and idioms can be used by the author to express certain thoughts and feelings. The poet is impressed by the fixed image and continues to create new works. We call it the “image continuity”. The continuity of image is particularly prominent in Li Bai's poems, it is not difficult to find that there are many repetitive typical images in Li Bai's poems. “The Moon over the Eyebrow Mountain” is a famous seven-character poem written by Li Bai. It describes the poet riding a boat down the stream from the Qingxi Posthouse on a bright autumn night. It expresses the poet's longing for his hometown and old friends when he left the country. This paper will use the case analysis method, taking the continuity of the image as the research perspective, and Xu Yuanchong's version of “The Moon over the Eyebrow Mountain” as a typical case, trying to analyze the continuity of the representative image "moon" and the continuity of the regional image, in order to expect to analyze the rationality of Xu Yuanchong's translation and enrich readers' understanding of these images.

Abstract: The link between linguistic deviation and translation techniques is enshrined in the conventionality of language use and communication. Linguistic deviation occurs when a text ignores conventional norms of a language in order to communicate a certain artistic merit and draw attention to the meaning of the message. The main objective of this paper is to interrogate how translation techniques used on bilingual billboard slogans in Cameroon lead to linguistic deviation and how such deviations affect communication and sociolinguistics. The corpus of this paper is composed of fifteen bilingual billboard slogans purposively selected from different parts of Cameroon. In terms of methodology, the data was collected by taking pictures of billboards and extracting their slogans. A qualitative descriptive method of document analysis was used with the help of Leech’s linguistic deviation theory and Jakobson’s communication functions. Regarding the results, the study identified graphological, semantical, grammatical and lexical deviations on the selected billboards caused by translation techniques like literal, reduction, adaptation, borrowing, discursive creation, amplification and transposition. As a result of linguistic deviation, the messages that were finally conveyed through bilingual billboards looked absurd and sometimes nonsensical. The paper recommends that certified translators should be employed to translate billboard slogans from French to English.
