Abstract: Computer-based assessment has been increasingly adopted in second language testing with the development of computer technology. Previous studies have been devoted to comparing computer-based assessment with paper-based assessment in terms of test results, but little is known about how the test process may be changed by the new format. With a focus on the assessment of reading, this study aimed to investigate the influence of computer-based format on the use of strategies during the reading process together with the final reading performance. It adopted case study as the methodology, recruiting twenty Chinese EFL learners at the university level as the participants. Two reading tasks were taken from College English Test Band 6 (CET6), respectively held in a paper-based format and a computer-based format. Questionnaires on use of reading strategies were adapted from previous studies to measure students’ strategy use during reading. Selected participants were interviewed after the reading tasks and the questionnaire to supplement quantitative data. It was found that students tended to perform better in a computer-based setting than a paper-based one, and that reading strategies can influence the final performance and may be used differently in the two settings. The possible reasons and pedagogical implications were then discussed and explored.

Abstract: China Daily is a mainstream English-language media in China and The 13th Five-Year Plan period is the key period for China to eliminate poverty. In this period, there are many poverty alleviation related reports. This paper took the poverty alleviation news reports in China Daily during this period as the research object and build corpus with them. Through the reporting verb classification method proposed by Geis, this paper studied the frequency and proportion of positive and negative verbs appear in these reports and discussed the reasons. The study found that positive verbs accounted for more than 88% of the poverty alleviation-related reports in China Daily, taking up the majority of all reporting verbs, while negative verbs accounted for less than 12% of all reporting words. The results were also compared with previous related studies to analyze the political stance and self-constructed national image conveyed in politics-related reports in China Daily. The contrast between positive and negative verbs is explained with the help of Fairclough's three-dimensional analysis framework: description, interpretation and explanation. This study related the percentage of positive and negative reporting words with poverty alleviation achievements, China's sense of responsibility for the international community, and national governance capacity. At the end of the article, some shortcomings of this study were also suggested for futher study.

Abstract: China has a long history of overseas migration, and Southeast Asia has been the traditional main destination of our overseas migration because of its geographical advantage. In the context of the global spread of the Huayu, it is of great significance to explore the evolutionary process of Huayu development in Southeast Asia as a relay station for the spread and radiation of the Huayu to the world. The overall situation of Huayu studies is that there are more lexical studies and less grammatical studies, and less attention has been paid to the development of Huayu in its historical plane, including its formation process and the facts of its development and evolution since then. It can be seen that the overall research is not balanced, and grammar itself is very important. Due to the lack of grammar research, the overall understanding of Huayu has been affected. The study of Huayu has developed rapidly, and various studies are being carried out. Relatively speaking, grammar is lagging behind and needs to catch up quickly. The article takes the phenomenon of degree adverb modifying nouns as an entry point to investigate the development and evolution of grammar in Southeast Asia Huayu. It is found that degree adverbs modifying nouns have shown an upward trend in the centuries-old Huayu, as evidenced by the fact that degree adverbs can be combined with more abstract nouns and the range of nouns modified has also been expanded. In addition, investigating the use of this linguistic phenomenon in Huayu, Putonghua, and Mandarin in a global perspective, it can be found that the three maintain a greater consistency.

Abstract: Philippines has been known to be an ethnically diverse country where people speak 181 different major and minor languages. Despite being a multilingual country, the Department of Education (DepEd) through the Republic Act 10533, implemented the Mother Tongue Based, Multilingual Education (MTB-MLE) in the primary level of the basic education. In the year 2012, Chavacano language was one of the languages used as medium of instruction in the primary level. Although Zamboanga City has been known to be the “Asia’s Latin City”, it is also known as the “melting pot” of the region because of the presence of different cultures bringing their own native languages. This scenario may give possibility of language mixing especially to children who do not master yet their L1. Thus this study aimed to determine the beliefs and use of the 39 participants about Chavacano (L1) as a Medium of Instruction (MOI) in L2 reading. Furthermore, study solicited the beliefs and use of the 39 participants about Chavacano (L1) as a Medium of Instruction in reading in English (L2). Using Descriptive Coding, the validated guided questions were coded, transcribed and analyzed. Results showed that the respondents were not yet proficient in their L2 and they were not exposed to L2 especially in reading as evidenced by their “sometimes” responses in reading and answering stories in English. There also seemed to be a dominant negative or unfavourable pattern on the students’ views on the role of L1 to L2 particularly in learning how to read. Generally, students did not see yet the connection or association between the languages in reading, more so, the pupils did not see the importance of their L1 in learning their target L2. They did think that Chavacano and English are both difficult languages. Moreover, this supported Ellis (1997) and Cummins (1979) Threshold Hypohesis that learners construct their own interim rules in learning a target language using their L1 knowledge if they believe that this L1 would help them in learning the task at hand or when they have become sufficiently proficient in the L2 for transfer to be possible. This also supported the findings that some problems in the mother tongue instruction were Teachers’ Guide and Learners’ Manual inconsistency, limited number of LM’s, lack of time in the preparation of localized instructional material, limited vocabulary.

Abstract: Traditional metaphor regards metaphor as a rhetorical device, and believes that metaphor is merely an embellishment or decoration in the form of language, and its main metaphorical function is to beautify the language, and to enhance the effect of language expression. Conceptual Metaphor Theory, put forward by the famous linguist Lakoff in 1980, enables the study of metaphor to realize a cognitive turn. In recent years, the study of conceptual metaphor has not only been applied to the analysis of word meaning and general text, but also extended to news discourse. The study of conceptual metaphor in news discourse has become one of the important hot topics of current research. At the beginning of 2020, the outbreak and spread of the new crown pneumonia epidemic is testing people all over the world. As China’s mainstream English-language media, China Daily frequently reports on this hot social event. This study intends to collect reports on COVID-19 in China Daily from January 1, 2020 to December 31, 2020 and establish a corpus to study further its conceptual metaphors. Finally, this study finds eight main kinds of conceptual metaphors, including war metaphors, journey metaphors, building metaphors, human metaphors, light metaphors, book metaphors, plant metaphors and evil metaphors. The metaphors reflect China’s values of courage, struggle and harmony as well as its social awareness of actively building a community with a shared future for mankind.

Abstract: Ẹdo and Esan belong to the group of genetically related languages referred to as the Ẹdoid group of languages, which in turn belongs, along with other Nigerian languages such as Yoruba, Igbo, Nupe, Idoma, and Izọn, to the Kwa branch of the Niger-Congo language family. The similarities between the speech forms of Ẹdo and Esan compared to the other Ẹdoid languages are evidenced in the high number of cognate sets based on a lexical statistical analysis. This naturally implies that the behaviour of sound segments in any of the two languages could serve as indicators of any evolutionary trend in any of the two languages. It is observed that the phonetically weak consonants [ɱ, n, ɹ] in Ẹdo lexical items alternate with their corresponding strong counterparts [m and l] in similar lexical items in Esan. The relative stability of the strong forms in contemporary Esan language seems to give credence to the claim of a dynamic sound change observable in contemporary Ẹdo language where the proto bilabial stops /b/, and /m/; the alveolar lateral stop, /l/, evolved into the relatively weak bilabial oral and labiodental nasal approximants, [β] and [ɱ] respectively, and the alveolar lateral approximant [ɹ], which is currently being outrightly deleted in any position of the words in which it occurs, thus following the evolution pattern /l/ > [ɹ] > [ø]. The over bearing influence of the English language and the Nigerian pidgin, the two languages that have taken over practically all Ẹdo homes, and the non-teaching of the language in the Ẹdo State educational system have been identified as catalysts to the endangerment of the Ẹdo language that may go into extinction in the very near future if drastic measures aimed at reversing the trend are not urgently and diligently applied.
