Abstract: As companies increasingly face scrutiny over their environmental impact, there is a growing need for innovative communication approaches that transcend the traditional role of the communications department. This study aims to explore the role of responsible communication in promoting sustainable development and effective communication indicators within a globalized context. By analyzing the evolution of responsible communication, this research identifies key strategies for mobilizing stakeholder support and fostering responsiveness to social concerns related to sustainability. The findings of this study emphasize the crucial role of communication in mobilizing reactions and developing transformative tools for change. It sheds light on the challenges faced by companies whose advertising practices are subject to scrutiny by consumers and citizens. The research suggests that responsible communication can serve as a powerful tool for promoting a more sustainable and socially responsible approach to business. Key factors, such as environmental impact, innovative approaches, and stakeholder engagement are examined in relation to responsible communication. The study highlights the importance of adopting an integrated approach that considers the broader social context, the expectations of stakeholders, and the potential for long-term impact. By doing so, companies can effectively navigate the complexities of a globalized world and proactively address sustainability challenges. Finally, this research underscores the transformative potential of responsible communication and its ability to shape the business landscape towards sustainability. It calls for a re-evaluation of communication practices within companies, urging them to embrace responsible communication as a strategic imperative.

Abstract: The paper, based on Systemic Functional Grammar and Visual Grammar, conducts a comparative analysis of multimodal textual meta-functions of movie posters from the perspective of multimodal discourse analysis. Corpus analyzed consists of 60 pieces of comedy movie posters released in Chinese film market, which are classified into Chinese, German and Indian movie posters according to where a movie was originally shot. This study aims to thoroughly explore the similarities and differences with regard to the way how semiotic resources of different modalities in comedy movie posters are combined with one another to represent meta-functional meanings both qualitatively and quantitatively. Through comparative studies, it is found that movie posters highlight notable variations among different cultural contexts as well as some similarities. Different characteristics and preferences with regard to the use of multimodal resources to represent the three meta-functions are revealed. For example, while Indian movie posters commonly feature demanding visual acts, Chinese and German movie posters tend to showcase offering visual acts. This paper is helpful in stimulating a further multimodal expression in designing Chinese movie posters so as not only to improve the visual effects of movie posters, but also to create limitless imagination of a movie to arouse the audiences’ strong curiosity and interest.

Abstract: In Mandarin two-character compound words, the syllable of the second rightmost constituent may be neutralized, which in combination with the first full tone as to form a neutral tone compound with a trochee prosody pattern [Strong-weak]. Because a constituent (character in writing form) can carry more than one tone, it is possible that a constituent has both a full tone form and a neutral tone form, which may be semantically different. This study focused on the prosodic features of the second constituent in both disyllabic neutral tone and full tone compounds across four full tones contexts. Our goal was to investigate the acoustic features of neutral tones in contrast with their full tone counterparts. For this purpose, we selected 80 minimal pairs of two-character compounds, i.e., 巴掌 /ba1zhang0/ (clap) and 手掌 /shou3zhang3/ (hands), their second constituents present the identical syllabic structure /zhang/ and the contrastive tone patterns (in this example, neutral tone (Tone 0) vs. full tone (Tone 3)). One-hundred sixty target compound words were embedded within a short carrier sentence and recorded by native speakers of Mandarin. The acoustic correlates of the paired second syllables within the minimal pairs were examined by using Praat and R-studio, including the duration, pitch (F0) and intensity, and the averaged pitch curve of target compounds are represented through the point-to-point graphical comparisons. Our results indicate two main findings. Firstly, we confirmed that the acoustic features of neutral tone are phonetically reduced in contrast to the full tone. Secondly, neutral tone shares some common features with their full tone counterparts in the intensity and pitch level, whereas the duration and pitch range reveal barely any significant differences across four full tones contexts. In the results, the pitch onset value of the second neutral tone is mainly dependent on the offset of the preceding full tone, except for the Tone 4. Our results suggest a phonetic interaction between the first full tone constituent and second neutral tone constituent, which lends support to the assumption that neutral tone is phonetically reduced in comparison with full tones, and it can be predicted on the basis of acoustic features of the first constituent like pitch offset.

Abstract: This paper examines the desemanticization of the negative morpheme ko in the Dondo language, spoken in the Republic of Congo. The work is based on two main approaches, Chomsky’s Minimalist Framework and Sangeet Khemlani’s Theory of Negation. The study reveals that, semantically, ko is selected by simple declarative clauses or sentences to denote negation. It is argued that, semantically, when the negative morpheme ko reduces its negative reading impact on a phrase, the phrase it negates undergoes movement. It moves from the final to the initial position of the sentence since it does not negate the entire sentence; it just governs a part of a sentence which can move, as a constituent, from one position to another. However, it derives from the discussion that ko can also be used in any sentence type (namely simple or complex declarative and imperative sentences) to express insistence. The contextual meaning of ko can be paraphrased or disambiguated either by the exclamatory words eh! /inh/hum or the morpheme kwa (only). Next, it comes out that intonation plays an important role in the understanding of the contextual meaning of ko. Generally, the high intonation shows that the insistence expressed by ko encodes obligation, angriness, whereas the low intonation expresses supplication, happiness, or politeness. Hence, the desemanticization does not emanate from grammatical class change; it is rather determined by intonation. It is also demonstrated that ko may be duplicated in some contexts where the former expresses the negation and the latter lays emphasis on the supplication.

Abstract: The study examines the diachronic changes during the May Fourth Movement and synchronic variation of the current use of the suffix -men, based on data from two corpora, Center for Chinese Linguistics (CCL) and Text of Recent Chinese (TorCH). Investigation in CCL shows that the suffix -men had already been used as a plural marker of human nouns in Qing Dynasty, while the usage of the suffix -men spreads from human to non-human nouns after the May Fourth Movement. Meanwhile, the prosodic and semantic constraints on the use of the suffix -men with human nouns have also been greatly relaxed. Investigation of the TorCH corpus reveals information on the current usage of suffix -men: the constraints on the usage of the suffix -men after human nouns and nonhuman nouns have been further loosened and the distribution of -men in discourse genres varies from a higher frequency of –men in prose and fiction to a lower frequency in scholarly literature. In the case of the development of -men since the May Fourth Movement, I argue the change is due to the type of borrowing referred to as frequential copying under the framework of code-copying. Code-internal factor of the use of -men as a plural marker in Chinese before May Fourth Movement is a prerequisite of copying, and the extra-linguistic factors, that is, the language ideology of improving Baihua through copying the grammar of Indo-European languages after the May Fourth and the increasing use of English since the adoption of opening-up policy, have greatly stimulated the copying of the plural marker from model code onto basic code.

Abstract: The article consists of two parts: On the one hand, a file created by the author with around 450,000 geographical names, which has been freely accessible on the Internet for several months, is presented. The title of this file is Nomina Geographica Europaca. Bibliographische Sammlung zu europäischen Orts-, Elur- und Gewässernamen. It can be reached at the following Internet address: https://adw-verwaltung.uni-goettingen.de/ortsnames/images-lightbox.php/. It took decades to compile the names contained therein. The collection contains water, place and field names, especially from Eastern and Central Europe. The author hopes that it will be useful for further research into the geographical names of Europe. In the second part of the article, a selection of geographical names from Eastern Europe is used to show that Slavic tribes knew and used different terms for geographical objects as they spread north and east. This opens up opportunities to identify older and younger Slavic settlements. Their mapping shows very clearly that older Slavic settlements can mainly be found in the Ukraine, while large areas of what later became Russian territory are primarily known for younger settlements. A comprehensive mapping of the mentioned place names further shows that the Pripyat' area cannot have been the home of the Slavic tribes, but that they must be sought south of it in the fertile areas of the Ukrainian black earth (loess soils). The sharp increase in the Slavic population described by ancient writers can be explained as follows: good arable soil is the basis for good and better harvests than in other areas with less good soil. As a result, the population in the areas with better soil grows faster and their languages and dialects spread more widely than those of other settlers.
