A Corpus-based Analysis of Multimodal Metaphor in Chinese Ecological Educational Advertisements

Abstract: With the development of technology and the extension to multimodality in linguistics, technology tools get more applied to linguistic study. It is recognized that metaphor should not be trapped in language, but expanded to various mode. Based on the multimedia corpus built by the multimedia annotator software ELAN which gives rise to a more detailed interpretation, this article attempts to explore mysteries in multimodal metaphor in Chinese ecological educational advertisements: what are prominent metaphors characterize this typical advertisement, how modes collaborate in multimodal metaphor, and how meaning creation is processed in multi-mode way. It is classified that four kinds of metaphors are prominently represented, that is, ontological metaphor, color metaphor, money metaphor, and BIG IS SIGNIFICANT. Various modes collaborate simultaneously to construct meaning, and it is suggested that in various modes, there exists differentiation between priority and the others. The more information a mode carries, the more significant it is in collaborations. The most efficient way of TV educational advertisements to convey meaning is visualization, so most of the time the visual mode acts as the priority in assistance with the others. Through simultaneous cueing -- saliently representing target and source domain simultaneously, and perceptual resemblance--the resemblance experienced through visual perception or auditory sense triggers similarity of the source and the target domain, meaning is created and conveyed to audiences.

Abstract: Diplomacy and diplomatic relations are a practical field, which has its role and status from the moment of policy management in ancient time. For the Uzbek people, the concepts of diplomacy and diplomatic relations are not news. Its roots go back to the distant past - history. However, the appearance of the language depends on the process of speech and speech activity, where speech is based on a specific speech environment. Diplomatic activity exists only when the government becomes independent. Modern Uzbek diplomacy has been forming since 1991, when Uzbekistan gained independence. Since then, a great opportunity has appeared for the linguistic study of diplomatic speech at Uzbek language. The following problems became the main incentive for studying diplomatic speech based on a linguistic approach. 1. In books about Rhetoric, diplomatic speech is limited to one paragraph. 2. Examples presented as diplomatic discourse are often supplemented by excerpts from the speech of historical and creative heroes of historical works or fiction. 3. Real diplomatic speeches, demanded and understanding modernity, are not available from a scientific point of view. In search of a solution to these problems, on this article researched lexemes that form the basis of diplomatic speech by exploring their paradigmatic relationships. As a result, it was discovered that there are more than two hundred lexeme associated with diplomatic speech. When they were selected and classified, ten thematic groups were formed, which means paradigmatic rows. The main purpose of this article is to study each semantic relationship between members of this paradigmatic lines in a linguistic aspect.

Application of Self-Constructed Corpus in the English Writing Course

Abstract: The corpus constituents are actually the miniature of language. As the computer technology continuously progresses, corpus-based research proves increasingly applicable to language teaching and learning. As a free corpus analysis software program designed specifically for use in the language classrooms, AntConc provides the users with a powerful toolkit with various features to analyze the loaded written texts. Basic functions like the concordance tool and cluster sections of Antconc demonstrate the possibility to assess the performance of students' language proficiency. Considering the fact that IELTS is widely recognized as a standardized test and a big number of Chinese students are preparing for it in order to study abrord, the present study managed to built a self-constructed corpus of students essays in the English writing course. By means of the sophisticated coding and tagging systems, we obtained a set of standard text materials attached with the label of part of speech. Based upon the data analysis of the students’ IELTS writing samples against the modal essay corpus, we conducted the corresponding evaluation of students' lexical resource and offer further suggestions and tailor-made solutions in order to help students improve their writing ability. Under the help of the model essay corpus, students might obtain useful instructions, increase grammar diversity and accuracy, thereby become more competent writers. Our study added more evidence to the conclusion that corpus has a great potential to fundamentally change the ways we approach language education. Apparently, teachers working with highly proficient students from diverse backgrounds need to be informed about the latest corpus tools for a more fine-tuned or specifically tailored application in their writing course.

Abstract: David Holm is an English native speaker of high proficiency in Zhuang language and Meng Yuanyao is a Zhuang native speaker of great familiarity with English. They worked together to produce an English version Hanvueng: The Goose King and the Ancestral King: an Epic from Guangxi in Southern China. This book is translated from the vernacular scriptures of the Zhuang Ethnic Group, one of the Chinese minorities. It was published in 2015. Based on a careful reading of this book, the author of this article argues: firstly, this book is of ethnographic Zhuang-English translation because it was translated directly from Zhuang language to English language by adopting ethnography methods of fieldwork and it provides numerous cultural and linguistic notes for those items that may be difficult for readers to understand; secondly, it characterizes the joint efforts of in-and-out governmental organizations, including various organizations, work units, and research projects, and the collaborative work of Zhuang and English giants, authority figures, involving officials, scholars, and common people; thirdly, it is no doubt a good example of ethnographic thick-translation version in translating Zhuang classics into English. This book provides a new approach to translating and introducing minority ancients works to the outside world to promote international communication and it is of great referential significance for “going global” strategy of Chinese minority classics.
