Abstract: A field experiment was conducted on sandy clay soils of Alduba, South omo, south western Ethiopia for two consecutive years with the aim of determining the optimal fertilizer application rate and the most profitable level for sorghum production. Twenty treatment combinations were made from five levels of nitrogen 0 kg of N ha-1, 23 kg of N ha-1, 46 kg of N ha-1, 69 kg of N ha-1 and 92 kg of N ha-1 with four level of phosphors 0 P kg of ha-1, 10 kg of P ha-1, 20 kg of P ha-1 and 30 kg of Pha-1. The experimental design was a randomized complete block design (RCBD) with three replications. The sorghum improved variety‘ Teshale’ was planted early in Ethiopian ‘Meher’ season of 2014 and 2015 for two years. Based on the objective function of profit maximization to determine the optimum returns, the highest two years average grain yield (2.689 tones ha-1) was recorded at a fertilizer application rate of 46 kg N ha-1 and 30 kg P ha-1 with a gross margin of 19703.27 ETB, net returns of 12991.57 ETB and a benefit-cost ratio of 1.4. This shows that farmers in the Alduba of south omo zone stand in a better position to make more profit from sorghum production.

Abstract: The study was conducted in Fentalle agro-pastoral district with the aim of studying the level of small holder agro-pastoral crop commercialization and analyzing the determinants of commercialization among the smallholder agro-pastoralists in the study area. Multi stage and random sampling technique was used to draw 109 households from three Kebele in the district. Data was collected with structured interview and analyzed using descriptive and Tobit regression. In addition, household commercialization index was calculated. The findings revealed that half of the respondents were not commercialize their product. Distance to the district market and TLU negatively affect commercialization and market participation meanwhile, the use of input and household income enhanced surplus production and commercialization. The study forwarded that improved market facility and market information access is necessary. The optimal and economical use of input will intensify crop production along with economical return.

Abstract: Conceptually correct and empirically accurate estimates of the economic value of water are essential for rational allocation of scarce water resource across locations, uses, users, and time periods. In Agarfa District, there is a water resource, specifically Weib River, which could be suitable for irrigation purpose. Yet, there is no well-constructed irrigation scheme in the area. The objectives of the study were to evaluate their willingness to pay for irrigation water use per hectare of irrigable land per year. Seemingly unrelated bivariate probit model was used to calculate the mean willingness to pay for irrigation water use per hectare per year. Out of the total sample households, 20% of the total households were not willing to pay and 80% were willing to pay for irrigation water use. The result of the seemingly unrelated bivariate probit model showed that households' mean annual willingness to pay amount was Birr 4018.02 per hectare per year, which suggests the possibility of a substantial amount of revenue from local community for development, maintenance and operation of irrigation projects.

Abstract: Market participation plays a crucial role in generating better income and enhancing welfare of smallholder farmers and thus contributes to alleviate poverty. This study investigated the determinants of smallholder farmers’ participation decision in potato market in Kofele district with the objective of identifying and analyzing factors affecting farmers’ decision in supplying their potato products to market. A multi-stage sampling procedure was used to select sample households for data collection. A total of 120 potato producer households were randomly selected from the district and semi-structured questionnaires were used to collect data. The descriptive statistics and probit model were applied to analyze factors affecting smallholder farmers’ market participation decision in potato market. The findings demonstrate that level of education, livestock owned, quantity of potato harvested, potato market price, and access to market information positively affect farmers participation decision whereas participation in off/non-farm activities were negatively affect farmers decision to participate in potato output market. This study suggested that a policy that improves determinants of market participation is recommended to enhance farmers’ market participation in potato output market.

Abstract: Agriculture is an important industry in all economies since it provides basic needs and feeds people. With the improvements of its productivity and increasing globalization, the shares of the total outputs (or GDPs) and employments from the agriculture industry have been increasingly less in many countries, including both developed and developing countries. How to stabilize and improve this important industry during its economic structure change is a challenging issue to many countries. This paper compares the agriculture industry in different countries and focuses on how developing countries like China can learn from other developed countries on strengthening and improving their own agriculture industry.
