Abstract: OBJECTIVE: To increase awareness of pre-prescription review and promote the development of its mode. METHODS: The pre-prescription review and the traditional prescription review were compared from the process. The 1239 of irrational prescriptions in outpatient and emergency clinics from June 2016 to June 2017 were analyzed. RESULTS: Compared with the traditional prescription review, the pre-prescription review had the advantages of reducing the waiting time for medicine, decreasing the inappropriate prescription, simplifying the returned prescription processes, etc. However, there were still some problems, such as poor auditability of non-standard prescription, low audit efficiency at rush hour, false-negative and false-positive prescription, etc. Among the 1239 irrational prescriptions in our hospital, the main factors were incomplete clinical diagnosis, inappropriate use and dosage, no indication of disease, inappropriate dosage forms or routes of administration. CONCLUSION: The pre-prescription review can ensure rational use of drugs and safe medication in clinic.

Abstract: Alzheimer's disease belongs to a group of pathologies called dementias, being this one the most common type. It is a neurodegenerative disease that causes a progressive and disabling impairment of cognitive functions, including memory, comprehension, language, attention, reasoning and judgment. Until now there is no cure, although there are treatments available that can improve the symptoms. In this paper we describe the disease, its classification and prognosis, as well as its physio pathological mechanism and the different diagnostic techniques currently being used. In addition, we perform an analysis of different therapies both pharmacological and non-pharmacological, focusing on conventional drugs marketed so far, making a comparison between them, as well as those strategies or therapeutic targets that are being researched, different phases of clinical trials which project different perspectives towards the future. For this, we carry out a bibliographic review of the most updated scientific literature, analyzing the most relevant information about this disease. Unfortunately, in the last years there have not been relevant bibliography or studies done. Finally, as a practical contribution to complement and conclude this study, we collect the dispensing data of several pharmacy offices, in order to approximate the data obtained through the bibliographic analysis with the treatments that are currently used in the Spanish population. The data found coincide with the daily practice at the pharmacy: the population gets older and the most used drug is Donepezil.

Abstract: In Nigeria, Aphrodisiac herbs as well as other herbal medicines are hawked on the roadside, sold in stores and most of them are not certified by relevant Drug Agencies to be fit for human consumption. They lack manufacturing dates, Expiry dates, Batch number and any information about the chemical composition of such herbs. The buyers of such drugs patronize the black markets in their bid to give their partners maximum sexual gratification. It is no longer irregular to see sellers of such herbs moving around on foot or in vehicles in the streets marketing their various merchandize without any sort of restriction. Married men purchase these herbs to satisfy their wives and mistresses; Wives also purchase these herbs on behalf of their men; Youths who aren’t married also purchase these herbs to exhibit their sexual prowess to their peers and friends. This research examined qualitatively and quantitatively the Lead and Cadmium concentrations in twelve locally sold Aphrodisiac herbs in South Eastern region of Nigeria. From the result obtained, 100% of the samples were within the lead permissible limit and 83.33% of the samples were also within the cadmium permissible limit as stipulated by the World Health Organization. It is recommended that Nigeria as well as other African countries should incorporate these herbs into the National healthcare System because there is an urgent need for quality assurance, safety and standardization of these herbs for the benefit of the consumers.

Abstract: This study was conducted to investigate the antiemetic, antimicrobial and anti-radical activity of methanolic extracts of Foeniculum vulgare. The antiemetic assay was carried out by using chick emetic model with minor modifications by calculating the mean decrease in the number of retching. The antimicrobial activity of the crude extract was performed by Disc Diffusion method. The anti-radical activity was determined by the 2, 2-diphenyl-2-picrylhydrazyl hydrate (DPPH) method. The anti-emetic activity of Foeniculum vulgare leaves on young chicks revealed that these extracts have a less anti-emetic effect. The group of chicks treated with Chlorpromazine was found to have 60.6 retches as compared to the 66 retches of the control group, thus Chlorpromazine reduced the retches by 7.93%. The chickens treated with leaves extracts inhibited the retches up to 2.03%. The minimum antimicrobial effect was found in this methanol crude extract. The extract did not appear potent in terms of both zones of inhibition and spectrum of activity. In anti-radical activity test, the extract showed moderate free radical scavenging activity with IC50 value 240.39μg/ml. while compared to that of the reference standard ascorbic acid. Methanolic extract of Foeniculum vulgare leaves have minimum anti-emetic and anti-microbial activities and moderate anti-radical properties.
