Participatory Variety Selection of Improved Onion (Allium cepa L.) Varieties at Wondo Genet and Heben Arsi, Southern Ethiopia

Abstract: Onion is a bulb vegetable crop produced for its nutritional and economic benefit worldwide. Also, this crop is widely produced in Ethiopia for domestic consumption and also generate income for the producers. Even though it is produced widely the producers use unimproved varieties which does not meet the market preferences lower in yield. So, participatory variety selection through demonstration of four onion varieties was conducted at Wondo Genet and Heben Arsi districts during 2019/2020 to 2020/2021. The experiment was done to evaluate the varieties through farmers’ participation. It was conducted on station for researchers’ data collection by replicating three times and non-replicated plot basis for farmers’ evaluation. The Researcher data and farmers preferences toward the varieties were collected and analyzed using SAS software and pair wise ranking respectively. The result showed that there was significant difference among the varieties. The highest total bulb yield (38.57 t ha-1) was obtained from Nafis and the lowest (31.28 t ha-1) was from the Nasik red variety. Also, the maximum bulb diameter (5.26 cm) and bulb length (4.83 cm) were recorded from Nafis variety and the lowest bulb diameter and length was obtained from Nasik red variety. Pair wise raking of farmers preference also, shown that Nafis was the first and best variety according to their criterion at both locations. Therefore, based on the result obtained it is better and recommended to produce Nafis onion variety for the farmers of Wondo Genet and Heben Arsi districts and other similar agro-ecologies.

Abstract: Taro is a tropical and subtropical perennial herbaceous root crop. There are various compelling reasons to encourage Ethiopians to cultivate root and tuber crops. Taro corms have a higher nutritional content than most other root/tuber crops. In the south, west, and southwestern regions of Ethiopia, taro is widely farmed and used as a food and source of revenue. Both chemical and organic fertilizers work well on taro. However, the vast majority of taro growers, particularly those who make a living from it, do not use fertilizer. During the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons, a field experiment was undertaken in the Cheha district of the Gurage zone to identify the proper rate of NPS and urea for taro yield. Due to inadequate agronomic practices, taro yields in the research region are much lower than the crop's potential yield. Plant population, planting pattern, weeding, fertilizer management, and better variety are the main factors causing low production. As a result, a randomized complete block design with three replications was used to layout the combination of three levels of urea and three levels of NPS fertilizer. Because it is a new release with a high yield, the Boloso-I taro cultivar was chosen. In both the 2017 and 2018 cropping seasons, the application of urea and NPS enhanced taro yield. The best cost-effective yield was obtained by applying 242 kg/ha NPS and 187.5 kg/ha urea. As a result, for taro production in the Cheha district, a combination of 242 kg/ha NPS and 187.5 kg/ha urea is suggested.

Abstract: The aim of this study was to find alternatives to the use of chemical fertilizers to help improve the availability in the nursery of plants of the Batard and Big ebanga cultivars of plantain. The trial was set up at the IRAD Agricultural Research Station in Njombé using a completely randomized Fisher block system. The study assessed the impact of three alternative fertilizers (Poultry manure, kitchen wood ash, mycorrhizal fungi) on the evolution of morpho-physiological parameters (number of leaves, pseudostem height, collar circumference and leaf area) and biochemicals (chlorophylls and carotenoids) of the plants with NPK treatment serving as a positive control. Ten weeks after treatments, results show that the poultry manure and the NPK have a significant impact on the morphological and biochemical parameters compared to the other treatments. The average heights of the pseudostem and that of the circumferences at the collar of the plants treated with NPK are respectively 20.1 cm and 5.7 cm for the Batard variety and 22 cm and 6 cm for the Big ebanga variety; those of plants treated with poultry manure are 17.4 cm and 5 cm for Batard and 19.2 and 5.6 for Big ebanga. The chlorophyll contents of the leaves of the plants treated with NPK and poultry manure are respectively 21.1 and 15.1 for Batard and 26.9 and 23.3 µg/ml for Big ebanga. A mass of 7g per plant of poultry manure appear as an alternative to the use of chemical fertilizers for producing plants from stem fragments.

Abstract: Tomato, Lycopersicon esculentum (L) Mill is an exotic fruit vegetable which has achieved popularity due to its versatility in fresh and processed forms. Viruses impose serious limitations on tomato cultivation in many countries. Field sampling was done randomly and single leaf samples were collected from 10 randomly selected plants per village. Cultivars observed in the fields were grown in an experimental plot in the university of Buea. Both field and experimental samples collected, were tested for AMV, CMV and PVY by DAS-ELISA. Rio grande, Tropimech, Roma savanna, Roma VF, Carioca and Buea local were the cultivars grown in the study site. Varied virus disease symptoms were observed, ranging from mosaic to leaf curl. AMV, CMV and PVY tested positive in all the locations and on all the cultivars. All cultivars tested positive for the different viruses. The incidence of mixed infection was higher than that of single infection. Generally, the incidence of all the viruses were low ranging from 2.85% to 5.63% in single and mixed infections respectively. The study indicated that tomato in this part of the country is affected by virus diseases and must be taking into consideration for large scale production.

Over the last few eras, nanomaterials provide a platform for researchers from diverse arenas due to the high surface-to-volume ratio and other novels, and new significant belongings. In Nanobiotechnology development of eco-friendly and reliable Synthesis of nanoparticles are important, but the development of a crucial method for the preparation of nanoparticles is very important. Apart from other nanoparticles zirconia nanoparticles are biocompatible; having mechanical, electrical, and optical properties draws much attention from the researcher. Different natural Phyto constituents exist in plant extracts such as polysaccharides, proteins, polyphenols, enzymes, vitamins, and steroids are responsible for the formation and stabilization of zirconium dioxide nanoparticles. Zirconium nanoparticles are receiving diverse biomedical applications because of their distinctive antimicrobial, antioxidant, anticancer, antifungal, antileishmanial, antilarvicidal, wound healing, anticholinergic, and anti-diabetic properties. In the last decades, different approaches are used for developing eco-friendly and safe approaches for the preparation of zirconium nanoparticles and avoiding hazardous by-products. In this review, we will focus on the biological preparation of zirconium nanoparticles and their diverse biomedical applications.
