Abstract: Aims: To investigate changes in liver function tests in calcular cholecystitis (acute and chronic) and to relate that changes to cholecystitis. Methods: A retrospective study including 389 patients with clinical and sonographic evidence of cholecystitis with exclusion of other causes of elevated liver function tests, which are done preoperatively and four weeks postoperatively. Results: Increased liver function tests observed in both acute and chronic cholecystitis. The only significant differences between both groups were a higher bilirubin level (P= 0.001) and WBC (P= 0.018). Pre and post-cholecystectomy levels of AST, ALK-P and GGT were significantly changed (P= 0.001). Conclusion: Our study showed that the abnormal biochemical liver function tests resolved rapidly and spontaneously after cholecystectomy indicating transient hepatocellular injury with cholecystitis.

Abstract: Background: Inflammatory breast cancer (IBC) is a rapidly progressive disease associated with high mortality in developing countries. The patients are managed for mastitis’s first and IBC becomes a diagnosis of exclusion after failed response to appropriate antibiotic therapy. This study was aimed at evaluating the outcome of management of IBC in North central Nigeria. Patients and method: This was a prospective analysis of consecutive patients presenting with breast cancer at the Abubakar Tafawa Balewa University teaching hospital Bauchi (ATBUTH) from January 2011 to December 2012. Results: A total of 52 breast cancers were managed, mean age was 31+/- 2years with an age range of 29 -33 years. There were 51 females and 1male (f: m = 51:1). IBC accounted for 9(17.3 %) of the breast cancers. Conclusion: IBC is frequently misdiagnosed as mastitis for various reasons and a high index of suspicion is required to clinch the diagnosis.

Abstract: Background: Penoscrotal Elephantiasis is a rare disease outside areas where filariasis is endemic. It is a benign disease but can become disabling in that it can make sexual relations difficult and sometimes even affect urination. We report four cases of primitive penoscrotal elephantiasis treated with complete surgical resection of pathological tissue and penoscrotal reconstruction, with good functional and aesthetic results. We update, through our own experience and a review of the literature, aspects of the diagnostic and therapeutic care of penoscrotal elephantiasis.

Abstract: Chest wall cold abscess is a rare presentation. Tubercular localization in the thoracic cage is rare and difficult to diagnose, due to multiple clinical presentations with chest wall cold abscess being the commonest. Cold abscess of the chest wall must be treated more aggressively, and meticulous debridement and wide resection including involved bones and cartilages is required followed by coverage with local muscle or musculocutaneous flaps. Tube drainage under adequate ATT cover is a viable treatment option especially in patients not amenable to surgical intervention. Sinus formation after tube drainage reflects inadequate medical treatment. Small bore tubes should be used, which should be removed once radiological and clinical evidence of diseases resolution is obtained. If Malecot’s catheter is left for a long time in the cold abscess cavity, it get’s retained due to soft tissue in-growth from the collapsing cavity into the catheter tip and wings. The tissue in-growth and fibrosis can lead to complete integration of this foreign body into the tissues, which can only be removed through a surgical procedure. In such cases Malecot’s catheter is removed en-masse with a cuff of granulation tissue to ensure complete clearance of the foreign material.
