Abstract: A vital aspect of economic analysis lies in its wealth of tools. These tools often enable economists to widen the frontiers of their analytical concerns to issues that have important economic implications, even though they may not be strictly economic in nature. Corruption is an example of such an issue. The effect or magnitude of corruption had varied among different societies and in different historical epochs. In recent times, this issue has assumed such a salient dimension as a social problem in some Less Developed Countries that discussion of it cannot be ignored in a paper of this nature. It is the writer’s contentions that economics analysis is particularly well equipped to study the complicities of corruption because it can generate more comprehensive operational policy proposal for its solution. In this paper, therefore this study intend to define corruption, economic effects of corruption, corruption on development, Nature of corruption in Nigeria, causes of corruption, consequences of corruption, economic development, political and social development, the out of corruption.

Abstract: Despite countervailing views and propaganda from government sponsored media agencies, there is a preponderance of evidence that the Nigerian economy is challenged on all fronts by the daily geometric increase in her unemployment figures, hence this study is undertaken to examine the impact of unemployment and inflation on the Nigerian economy between 1981 to 2015. The study adopted an Autoregressive Distributed Lag (ARDL) approach and other econometric tools of analysis to answer the objectives set out in the study. The Augmented Dickey-Fuller, Phillip-Perron Unit Root Test and Bounds Test method of cointegration employed indicates that the series used in the model are all stationary with a unique long run relationship established among the variables. Major findings revealed that unemployment has an insignificant impact on economic growth. The study also established an inverse relationship between inflation and economic growth within the period under reference. Based on the foregoing, the following recommendations among others were made: First, in a bid to control the naira exchange rate since it does have bearing on inflation, the government should put in place an enduring framework to buffet the risk of the domestic producers for them to take innovative roles of developing and manufacturing products that will have competitive advantage in the international markets. This is critical to the realization of a stable inflation rate and self-reliance for Nigeria. Secondly government should revitalize the various ailing industries and establish new ones to encourage massive industrialization. This strategy will create massive jobs for the teeming graduates and reduce the frightening unemployment figures confronting Nigeria.

Abstract: The purpose of this paper is to investigate the impact of board monitoring intensity on firm performance and further investigate the moderating effect of agency conflict on the relationship between monitoring intensity and firm performance. This paper uses a panel data of 137 firms listed on stock exchanges in Ghana and Nigeria over a period of seven years. System generalized method of moments and other estimation techniques were adopted for the study. The paper compute agency score using principal factor analysis and examine the moderating effect on the relationship between board composition measures and firm performance. Our findings which are robust across a number of econometric models that deal with different kinds of endogeneities indicate a positive and statistically significant relationship between board monitoring intensity and firm performance. A further examination using the agency score computed from principal factor analysis of the four main agency proxies indicates that agency conflict moderate the relationship between monitoring intensity and firm performance.

Abstract: Social support is an important factor in older persons’ lives. During old age, physical strength often decreases, income can reduce, and vulnerability may increase due to disease and dependence. Many older persons, therefore, require various types of assistance from family members and friends in support of their health and well-being. The dual purposes of this study, which was conducted in two southern districts of Bangladesh, were to evaluate older persons’ social support and to investigate the relationship between social support and socio-demographic characteristics. Data were collected from 280 older people via the Duke-UNC Functional Social Support Questionnaire (DUFSS). Descriptive statistics were used to analyze demographic and social support data. One way classification of analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used to compare different groups of older persons with different socio-demographic characteristics. Participants reported a medium level of social support. Being male, married, literate, and employed were found to be significant factors positively associated with older persons’ social support. The identification of further factors that affect older persons’ social support is recommended.
