Abstract: Traffic congestion is a key issue facing transport planners and managers around the world with many now asking if there are any promising technologies offering new solutions. In the US, the cost of congestion was $121 billion in 2012 and in 2015 alone Australia’s capital cities were estimated to have a combined congestion cost of $16 billion, expected increase to $37 billion by 2030. With the rapidly growing availability of data and the ability to analyse large data sets this paper investigates the question “What role can 'Big Data' play to assist with congestion management?” There is great interest and hype around 'Big Data' and this paper provides a summary of an investigation into its value to assist in relieving congestion. The paper explores the emerging types of large data sets, considers how data will be sourced and shared by vehicles and transport infrastructure in the future, ad explores some of the associated challenges. Despite the opportunities of Big Data not being fully realised it is already clear that it presents a significant tool for transport planners and managers around the world to assist in managing congestion. The research is based on research undertaken with the Sustainable Built Environment National Research Centre (SBEnrc).

Abstract: (1) Background: As a common problem, Road Traffic Accidents (RTAs) is vastly experiencing by the present world and which is severe in Bangladesh. Nowadays the road traffic accidents have occurred by the tobacco consumption habits where mostly tobacco control law is avoided in Bangladesh. The study aims to investigate the effects of tobacco control law on road traffic accidents in Bangladesh. (2) Methods: This cross-sectional study included 424 questionnaire surveys with drivers (bus and truck) and 10 KIIs. Chi-squared tests were used to measure differences between various parameters (related to tobacco control law and RTAs), while logistic regression models were used to determine the relationship among tobacco control law, RTA risk factors and socio-demographic features. (3) Results: This study result shows 75.9% of respondents are tobacco users where 76.4% have knowledge about tobacco control law. About 93.4% know that smoking in public transports is strongly prohibited by the law where 80.7% of them abide by the tobacco control law daily. Therefore, about 64.6% of respondents were involved in RTAs. A statistically significant association was found between RTAs and knowledge of drivers about tobacco control law (p>0.013) and having knowledge on “smoking in public transports is prohibited by the law” (OR=2.945, p=0.016) is also strongly associated with road traffic accidents. (4) Conclusion: A vast majority of the heavy vehicle drivers are well known about tobacco control law and they are obliged to the law in public transports with satisfactory level.

Abstract: The linear generator (LG) is integrated into a system that called the free piston linear generator (FPLG). In recent year, free piston engine that is studied by many researchers, has some advantages. Therefore, the application of the line generator in free piston for converting the chemical energy to electrical energy that can be used for plug-in hybrids to extend the range of operations as an alternative energy converter. Therefore, the optimizing of linear generator performance be able to significantly reduce the vehicle's fuel consumption. The parameters in permanent magnet linear electric machine (PMLEM) are designed by Maxwell software and the optimal parameters is carried out via the flux density. To achieve this goal, a linear generator in free piston engine with a flat structure and quasi-Halbach array flux structure was proposed. The simulation of linear generator is performed based on the speed ranges in the New European Driving Cycle (NEDC) for a mid-size car. In the study, a linear electrical machine (LEM) is designed by Maxwell software with translator that has various diameters. The results show that the suitable parameters for stator and rotor about 7.7 mm and 14 mm, respectively. Because the flux density for this design’s stator and rotor yoke avoids saturation state and generates the highest electrical output compared to the other states. Besides, the paper also examined the power output at different frequencies from 15 Hz to 50 Hz, corresponds to a velocity amplitude of 3.6 m/s to 12 m/s. The simulation result shows that the frequencies from 15Hz to 30 Hz with 4.8 m/s to 7.2 m/s (1200 rpm to 2100 rpm), respectively meets engine speed operation ranges in hybrid vehicle and these frequencies produce the power output that increases considerably about 7.5 kW at 30 Hz.

Abstract: In modern society, private cars have become the first choice for many families because of their convenience and versatility. The volume of vehicles on the road is the basis of traffic accident and traffic congestion. In urban sector the traffic congestion is normally high due to the green light time interval at four road intersections. The traffic light control and time setting are basically timer control operation at current traffic control management system, this shows that, the current system is not intelligent so that there is still heavy traffic congestion. It is vital to implement routinely adjusted schedule as per the real-time position of vehicles at urban cross road intersection. Now, there are various detector systems for traffic monitoring, like Inductive Loop microwave radar, laser, infrared, ultrasonic, magnetometer and video image processing. But they have relevant weakness, such as high cost and complex technology. As a more and more widely used technology, image processing plays an important role in the management and control of intelligent transportation system. Image processing systems are based on motion detection of vehicles, wherein computer vision algorithms extract vehicles from traffic video data for traffic density estimations. This paper is an analysis on scheduling of traffic light of traffic management system using Fuzzy Control Algorithm. With the increase of the number of vehicles and population, it will also improve the traffic jam and the mood of people because of the cause of jam. Rather than previous technology, it will be low cost and simple, which can be adopted in every place as far as possible. MATLAB tool was used to figure out the variables impact on scheduling of traffic light at urban traffic intersection. The vehicle number, vehicle speed, lane length and vehicle type variables are identified and tested against vehicle driving for conclusion on traffic management performance. From findings the results were identified as the vehicle number, vehicle speed, and vehicle type have significant positive relationship with vehicle driving. However, the lane length did not significantly affect the vehicle driving. This indicates that the lane length is less important in scheduling of traffic light at urban traffic intersection.
