Abstract: WebRTC is project that allows browser-to-browser voice, video and data communication without the use of plugins. It enables rich, high quality, Real Time Communications applications to be developed for the browser, mobile platforms, and Internet of Things (IoT) devices, and allows them all to communicate via a common set of protocols. In this paper we employ the capabilities of the WebRTC APIs to implement a platform for synchronous collaboration, screen casting and multimedia communication.

Abstract: Given male domination of the cinema medium, women portrayal in films has dominantly been stereotypical. This trend has been observed even in the African cinema. To counter this trend, a number of theorists and feminist schools of thought have proffered the African alternative cinema movement which insists on women writing their story by themselves so as to correct patriarchal portrayals of women in films. This paper seeks to critically examine this movement with respect to realism. Based on observation and a critical analysis of some Ghanaian and Nollywood films directed by females, it argues that the alternative African cinema may orchestrate a portrayal of women which is more utopian than realistic. Though having the potential to pertinently question the status quo – which is still highly detrimental to women – such a cinematic movement may somehow depart from factual or empirical reality about African women to rather construct and sell a dreamed – but unrealistic – image of the African woman.

Abstract: This study titled Social Media as a Communication Tool to Support University Student-Services: Affordances, Limitations and Opportunities for Innovations sought to determine the affordances of social media as a communication tool to support student services as perceived by the administrators, faculty, and students; the identified limitations and glitches of social media as a communication tool to support student services as experienced by the respondents and ways to address these limitations and glitches; and the opportunities to enhance usage of social media for university student services. Department academic chairs, faculty coordinators and faculty members (8 respondents), and students (123 respondents) from seven academic departments participated in the study. A qualitative approach through open-ended survey was employed. The Theory of Affordances by James J. Gibson served as the theoretical underpinning of the study. The respondents declared that the use of social media has significantly aided them in their enrollment concerns, academic department-student collaboration and academic department-student communications in general. Opportunities for continuous interactions to discuss student concerns that should be attended to by their respective academic departments were found to be favorable. Blocking of social media in the university premises is the major glitch identified. Faculty and students depended on their Internet connections in their respective houses or outside of the university to coordinate with each other online. Security/privacy, language, content and behavioral issues were other concerns that could be addressed in a social media use guideline.

Abstract: To help students find language classes, especially vocabulary lessons more interesting in English as a Foreign Language (EFL) context, a study was conducted to investigate the effects of short massages services (SMS) via social networks on EFL learners' vocabulary learning process. To this end, an experimental approach was applied to assess the efficacy of SMS-based teaching on students' vocabulary learning. A PET proficiency test, two time-series vocabulary progress tests, and a post-test were applied to explore the effects of SMS on students' vocabulary learning process. Then the difference in mean scores was compared to answer the research question. The study has revealed that: (1) the use of SMS via social networks as a teaching tool had a positive effect on students' vocabulary learning; (2) the experimental group obtained somewhat higher scores in the post-test than in two time-series progress tests, making the difference between the progress tests and post-test significantly different; (3) the difference between the two progress tests and post-test for control group was not statistically significant; and (4) the experimental students were more differentiated than the control students, as shown by a statistically significant difference between the mean scores of both groups in post-test in favor of the experimental students.
