Abstract: The study was about rural electrification on maize value addition in Mpumunde Sub-County, Lyantonde District. The study specific objectives were to; characterize maize value addition actors benefiting from rural electrification, identify factors limiting farmers from participating in maize value addition other than electrification, assess the contribution of rural electrification towards adding value to maize. The study employed a descriptive cross-sectional research design and primary data was collected from 200 respondents. The data was analysed using SPSS version 22.0. The study concluded that maize value addition actors who benefited from rural electrification were characterized by low level of education that is average number of years in school being six; limited size of land with average of 4 acres and majority had productive age with an average of aged 38. The study also concluded that there were factors limiting farmers from participating in maize value addition other than electrification which were; limited training on value addition was significant at (p=.027). Skills and experience at (p=.021), Credit services/financing at (p=.003). Market availability at (p=.026). Materials and equipments to use at p= (.029). Level of education and storage facilities were seen non-significant at 5% level of significance with p-values (p=.312; p=.261). The final conclusion was that maize value adders agreed that the rural electrification connection to maize milling centers mostly were more efficient in their operations than the non-connected milling centers. They had improved quality value added products, efficiency in processing activities, operated for long hours and had faster processes. The study recommends that, there is a need for the government to link with the donors like World Bank who have already acknowledged through their own studies that there should be a need for massive injection of funds to support the rural electrification programme. There should be more grace period for the rural people in terms of repayment period since they are not used to the urban living style where deadlines on payment attract severe action like total disconnection. Maize value adders should be subsidized with value addition equipments at a fair price to help them sustain production of better quality value added products. The study recommends that village saving cooperative societies limited render soft and affordable loans at low interest rate to help farmers finance their value addition activities and ensure sustainability of quality value added products.

Abstract: The rapid expansion of Addis Ababa into peri-urban areas has resulted in detrimental effect such as the loss of agricultural land, forest degradation, and worsened livelihoods. With a significant influx of people from both Addis Ababa and its rural areas, the Oromia Special Zone surrounding Finfinnee has experienced rapid urban growth. This phenomenon exemplifies how areas can quickly expand from the city center to the outskirts, resulting in land grabbing and peri-urbanization. Unfortunately, the city's governance system makes land expropriation decisions based on immediate needs, without considering the current capacity and demographic dynamics. Empirical data shows that these plans have not effectively managed the increasing urbanization. To achieve sustainable urban development, it is crucial to understand population growth rates and the expansion of urban areas. Therefore, a comprehensive study aims to investigate the continuous urban growth in Addis Ababa and its surrounding towns. The most effective approach to address conflicts and promote sustainable development involves regional planning, good governance, coordinated economic development, environmental preservation, and efficient utilization of urban land. By adopting an Ethiopian mindset and acting at the regional level, this strategy can foster social equity, economic stability, and environmental viability.

Abstract: The study was about Irish potato Value addition Innovations and Utilization of Value added Products on Livelihood Improvement among utilizers. The study specific objectives were to; identify value added products, their utilization and their effect on the livelihood improvement among utilizers, determine the factors affecting value addition of Irish potatoes and utilization of value added products on livelihood improvement and establish the relationship between Irish potato value addition innovations and livelihood improvement among utilizers. The study employed a cross-sectional research design and primary data was collected from 174 respondents. The data was analysed using SPSS version 22.0. The study concluded that that potato chips had a positive significant effect on livelihood improvement at 5% level of significance at p=.002*, Crisps were a strong predictor of utilizer’s livelihood improvement at 5% level of significance at p=.003*, a positive and a significant relationship were observed between potato peels/animal feeds and livelihood improvement at 5% level of significance at p=.002*), potato flour was a strong predictor of livelihood improvement 5% level of significance at p=.005). The study also concluded that there factors affecting value addition and utilization of value added products on livelihood improvement in Kitumba and Bubare Sub-counties, Kabale district. Such as; income status (p =.004), lack of knowledge on value addition technologies (p =.041), lack of storage facilities (p =.000), limited access to market information (p =.014), limited access to credit services (p =.024), and electricity shortages and load shading (AOR = 1.121, 95% CI:.226 - 2.566; p =.004). The study finally concluded that general correlation of.452 was observed between Irish potato value addition innovations and livelihood improvement through value addition. The study recommends that, policy makers should come up with loan package intended for those interested in value addition. Farmers and individual training sessions in form of workshops, seminars and farmer field days should be encouraged so as to enable farmers exchange ideas on how to add value to their sweet potato and learn from each other while at the same time encouraging them to produce more so as to take advantage of economies of scale.

Abstract: Ship recycling, commonly referred to as ship dismantling, is an inherently sustainable practice with global implications. It involves the reverse engineering process of disassembling obsolete ships to recover reusable materials in a safe and environmentally friendly manner. Over the past two decades, ships have predominantly been beached in South Asian countries such as Bangladesh, India, China, and Pakistan, allowing local yards to dismantle vessels with moderate preventive measures and substantial manual labor. Ship recycling stands as a significant and environmentally conscious industry, witnessing the annual recycling of approximately 1000 obsolete ships globally. Currently, this industry is predominantly led by three South Asian countries—India, Bangladesh, and Pakistan. In Bangladesh, the industry commenced with the dismantling of stranded ships, evolving into a large and profitable sector that generates substantial employment opportunities for thousands of semi-skilled workers in poverty-prone areas. While the ship recycling industry presents opportunities, it also poses challenges for coastal zone management, encompassing environmental, law enforcement, and worker safety concerns. The surge in demand for ship recycling has prompted increased regulatory scrutiny at both national and international levels. This pressure culminated in the development of the Hong Kong International Convention (HKC) by the IMO in 2009, mandating safety and environmental protection standards at recycling yards. Achieving a perfectly green ship recycling process in line with European standards is inherently costly. However, a viable and almost green ship recycling approach, integrating the current common practice of beaching methods in Asian countries, is entirely feasible. Despite limitations and challenges, the industry significantly contributes to Bangladesh's GDP and the overall socio-economic landscape. Currently, there has been a visible reduction in Bangladesh's market share due to stringent environmental regulations, while competitors have experienced increases. This study represents an analytical effort to evaluate the current global ship recycling scenario, exploring its potential, challenges, and the future trajectory of both local and global ship recycling industries.
