Abstract: The importance of transportation in the development of economies around the world can’t be overemphasized; because a well-developed transportation system plays a vital role in the economic development of the country. Though, rural infrastructure such as rural roads is very important, rural road investments do not occur in a vacuum. Hence, the economic importance of the intended road should be assessed before the implementation of the project. This document is prepared for an economic justification of the proposed Debre Elias – Yewula Road Project. Debre Elias Woreda is one of the most productive woredas in East Gojjam Zone and it is the main wheat-producing woreda in Amhara National Regional State (ANRS) known as the breadbasket of the west gojjam zone. And also, it is suitable for a variety of agricultural products such as crops, fruits, and vegetables as well as livestock production. Debre Elias woreda contributes more than 10% of east gojjam zone major crops production such as Teff, Wheat, Maize, and sesame. This woreda contributes more than 17% and 10% of the total wheat and maize production in east gojjam zone. In addition, Debre Elias Woreda is home to people who have made great contributions to the country and the world. For example, Kegn Geta Yoftaye Nigussie, Dr. Hadis Alemayehu, Abune Theophilos; Melaku Begosew, Dr. Esayiyas Aleme Engida, and others. In the tourism sector, it is a woreda with many natural and man-made places and resources to be visited. For example, Selassie Monastery, Debre Elias Church; Debre Genet Abo Church, the Abba Fekikh Yassin grave, Forty-four Ponds, the Nile Springs, and the Abba Tekle-Alpha Pillar are very historic places and have many visitors every day. Moreover, Debre Elias woreda has various types of natural resources and minerals such as gums and resins, sand, granite, marble, coal, quartz, iron, and others. Especially this woreda is the source of industry and construction minerals such as granite, quartz, and sandstone with coverage of more than 4500 ha, 3000 ha, and 4800 ha respectively. Though Debre Elias Woreda has great potential in agricultural production, natural resources, tourism and human resources, it has no quality road yet to utilize its potential. Therefore, it is recommended that, the implementation of the intended road project will help to utilize the potential of the woreda and it is a great fortune for the region as well as the country.

Abstract: Ethiopia has large number of small ruminant resources, but its contribution to the national economy is far less than its potential. This study was undertaken to analyze sheep value chain actors and their roles, to examine market performance of actors and find out the existing constraints and opportunities of sheep value chain in Basona Worena District, North Shewa Zone, Amhara Regional State of Ethiopia. The primary data was collected from a sample of 366 farmers from five Kebeles and other 40 sheep value chain actors through structured questionnaires, focus group discussion, key informant interview and personal observation. The data was analyzed using descriptive statistics of mean, standard deviation, frequency, Value Chain Analysis and marketing margin. Results show that input suppliers, farmers, traders, processors, service providers and consumers were the main sheep value chain actors in the study area. The sheep production system was traditional that needs intervention to transform in to market-oriented one. Eight sheep market channels were identified in the study area and the share of farmers from final sheep price was 35% which was very low. Feed shortage, sheep diseases, lack of linkage between Debre Brihan Blanket Factory and farmers, lack of improved sheep rams and low awareness of farmers’ on market oriented sheep production were the major constraints of sheep production in the study area. On the other hand government’s commitment to increase meat export, increment of export abattoirs, high demand of live sheep and sheep meat in both domestic and gulf countries and geographical location of the study area were the major opportunities. Therefore, farmers should have to form farmers’ small ruminant cooperative; strengthen the linkages among them and other value chain actors to increase their bargaining power and to be more beneficiary from the marketing of their sheep. Moreover, policies and strategies aiming at supplying improved sheep breeds, veterinary drugs and feeds, providing financial support, creating awareness and giving training for farmers on market oriented sheep production system are recommended.

Abstract: The overarching purpose of this study was to use approaches from the Autoregressive Distributive Lag (ARDL) Model to uncover the causes of Ethiopia's trade balance. Ethiopia's economy was primarily reliant on earnings from the sale of primary commodities, focused on a small number of export commodities and market outlays to finance the importation of desperately needed capital goods. As a result, the country's exports failed, resulting in a persistent trade imbalance in international trade. As a result, the study concentrated on the key determinants of Ethiopia's trade balance, including the structure, value, volume, and direction of Ethiopia's export and import. The bound testing approach of Johansson co-integration test and error correction model was developed within the autoregressive distributed lag (ARDL) model framework, and annual data for the period 1990 to 2020 was used to investigate whether a short run and long run relationship exists between trade balance and its determinants. The main purpose of this paper was to show that lnFEA might show long-run negative and short-run positive trade balance relationships. lag trade balance, on the other hand, has a short-term positive relationship with trade balance, but REER has a long-term and short-term negative relationship with trade balance.
