Abstract: Rwanda's education is facing the challenge of a language barrier, especially the instructional language of the students. Often the students fail to understand the lessons due to a lower level of understanding and communicating in English as an instructional language which is a second language to them. We realized that every teacher should be a language teacher as well. Therefore, the use of appropriate methods of teaching their subjects on the one hand, and language teaching on the other hand, is the appropriate way to understand instructional language. In this context, we investigated the best tool to fulfill the teaching of different subjects on the one hand and a second language on the other hand. So, this issue influenced the emergence of this article which was based on two specific research objectives. The first was to evaluate the effectiveness of literature in second language teaching in the context of a competency-based curriculum. The second was to determine how literature can be used in second language teaching in the context of a competency-based curriculum. The data collection methods used were interviews, observation, and literature review. The research participants were English teachers and students of senior three in selected secondary schools in Rwanda. The sample was the senior three teachers and students of English as well as the literary works. That sample was obtained using the purposive sampling method. The study results show that the literature contains the best examples of teaching a second language. This is due to the argument that we find examples of teaching grammar, vocabulary, and all language skills in literary works. In addition, the results showed that literature motivates students to practice the language in real life and helps them develop twenty-first-century skills as the main goal of a competency-based curriculum. Finally, the article has demonstrated the challenges of using literature as a language teaching tool and the strategies to be taken.

Abstract: This study aims to construct reporting on cases of domestic violence that befell LK and RB in various Instagram news headlines through Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis approach. Sources of data were taken from an online news media called Instagram, namely narasinewsroom, detikcom, and liputan6 with a publication time range from September to October 2022 with research subjects in the form of news headlines related to celebrity news. With the three dimensions of discourse from Norman Fairclough's critical discourse analysis, data analysis was carried out in three stages, namely the descriptive analysis stage, the interpretation analysis stage, and the explanatory analysis stage. The results found that through the microstructural dimension, the eight news headlines used language tools by 1) choosing vocabulary that was focused on the various phrases, 2) grammatical units dominated by phrases, and 3) a form of news that emphasize declarative sentences. Then, through the mesostructural dimension, the three instagram news headlines have different characteristics and characters in delivering their news, but are still presented accurately and objectively so that the news content can be conveyed to readers. Finally, through the macrostructural dimension, with the news of domestic violence cases, LK and RB received a negative image in the eyes of the Indonesian people, because they were seen as contradicting their previous image as a harmonious couple. The public is disappointed with LK's decision to reconcile with RB on the basis of household sustainability. Again, gender awareness for victims of domestic violence needs to be encouraged because it is difficult for victims of domestic violence to get out of abusive relationships. This negative image is formed by news headlines using tendentious language to attract readers.

Abstract: The study investigates the high-stakes English test for the SEE examination, emphasizing a mismatch with the curriculum's language skills and prompting exploration into test design processes and influencing factors. This research employs a qualitative case study approach. The findings reveal a gap between regulations valuing language skills and practical implementation in assessments. The tests are based on traditional testing philosophy, with inadequate standardization in the test items and test inadequate standardization in the test items and test administration. However, the bulk of these evaluations indicated factors including the teacher, the institution, and the students that had an impact on student learning. The four language skills—listening, speaking, reading, and writing—are valued by assessment regulations, but our classroom environment and evaluation system seldom put this into reality. Summative public exams, administered externally, lack feedback on teaching and primarily serve student progression. Despite recognizing the efficacy of communicative language instruction, the prevalence of non-communicative approaches in exams raises questions about students' communicative skills development. Although the testing literature is replete with theoretical discussions of test design, reviews, and validation (as seen by the references given previously), there is a lack of attention on how high-stakes language exams are actually constructed, particularly in developing cultures. Tests used in external examinations at various stages of schooling in these civilizations are of special importance. Although public examinations in English and other courses have been utilized in Nepal for decades, there has been little study on how these tests are created, what learning or success is targeted for evaluation, and what repercussions these tests may have for students and their families, the education system, and society at large. The researcher concludes by advocating for the adoption of theoretical advancements in testing within the Nepalese educational system and globally, emphasizing the importance of critically examining discrepancies within regulatory correlation, causation, and inconsistencies between testing and curriculum.
