Abstract

From the 21st Century Agenda to the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, it is evident that emphasis on the construction characterized by sustainable development has become an important goal and strategic focus on China national development and construction at present time. This article is intended to discuss the sustainable fashion features and designs based on contemporary workwear styles, and propose sustainable design strategies by analyzing the historical background, functional characteristics, and development trends of workwear styles and their applications in modern society. Featuring durability and usability, the workwear style originated from the working class in the early 20th century. With time, such workwear style, being a design orientation maintaining both usability and aesthetics, is turning into a hot spot among the fashion community. Contemporary workwear goes beyond merely working clothes into a cultural symbol representing respect for all labors and the pursuit of functional aesthetics. In the context of sustainable fashion, the design concept in relation to the workwear style provides a new perspective for the application and recycling of environmental-friendly materials as well as the transparency in the production process. This research starts from analyzing the core elements of the aesthetic characteristics within the workwear style, including costume styling and cutting, wear-resistant materials, and versatile design; then it discusses how these characteristics may be combined with the sustainable fashion principle. Secondly, it discusses consumers’ acceptance to the workwear styles and their perception on sustainable fashion. By way of questionnaire and interviews, the level of attention consumers have on sustainability when choosing workwear as well as their expectations for brand social responsibility are explored. These data are valuable market feedback for designers in product development. Finally, this research proposes a series of sustainable costume design strategies based on the workwear style. This includes designing modular products to facilitate repair and recycling, to use environmental-friendly dyes and fabrics, and to advocate for transparent supply chain management. With these strategies, designers may not only create fashionable products in line with the market needs, but also promote a more sustainable development for the entire industry. In summary, this research reveals the importance of contemporary workwear styles in sustainable costume design, emphasizes the responsibility and potential of designers in promoting sustainable development, and provides theoretical support and practical guidance for future design practices.
